What do you need to perform LASIK eye surgery? Precise and stable DC motors

Today, there are many methods of surgery, covering the whole body from head to toe. Eye surgery has now become a standard operation. State-of-the-art technologies, such as laser equipment, have become widespread. All the instruments and apparatus have to be precise and reliable.

A surgical instrument is placed precisely over the eyeball with the aid of a controlled vacuum, and an incision is made in the uppermost layer of the cornea. The resulting circular flap is not detached completely. It remains firmly connected to the cornea, like a hinge. Then the flap is folded to one side; the operating field has now been prepared. This intervention serves to prepare for corrective surgery to restore eyesight and remedy other vision defects using laser beams.

Amadeus II™ Microkeratome powered by MICROMO stepper motors
The precision cut is performed by the Amadeus II™ Microkeratome (shown above) made by Ziemer Group. With precision, the blade is moved forward and back by the FAULHABER® stepper motor with PRECIstep® technology, along with a planetary gearhead. A FAULHABER® brushless DC motor causes the blade to oscillate simultaneously. For patients, the method provides a sound and lasting alternative to glasses and contact lenses, and it is also extremely convenient. Surgery takes place on an outpatient basis in 10 to 15 minutes and is largely pain-free; recovery times are short, and the technique meets stringent safety standards.

PRECIstep® stepper motor technology
MICROMO's two-phase stepper motors are constructed with two different technologies. The AM series motors are constructed with a patented technology allowing for maximum power in a small package. The rotor is designed using NdFeB magnets placed equidistantly on the rotor hub. The ADM series motors are constructed with a magnetized disk magnet hub. Both designs reduce the number of components needed for assembly and provide for high reliability and outstanding shock and vibration resistance. These unique stepper motor designs result in a reliable, powerful, and quiet motor in a compact size.

The single and two-phase stepper motors are conceived with proprietary technology, featuring minimum volume and weight. The multi-polar rotor and radial permanent magnets design, featuring a reduced number of components used, gives these stepper motors a very high reliability and an outstanding resistance to shock and vibrations.

The benefits resulting from these features make the stepper motors a reliable, high-performance, choice when small sizes are required and a quiet-running device is needed in demanding motion applications.
